5G Network in Nigeria



The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) insisted that there is no deployment of 5G network in Nigeria at the moment.

NCC's Director of Public Affairs, Dr Henry Nkemadu, said this in a statement while responding to claims that the telecommunication industry has planned to switch on 5G in Lagos on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. He said the commission had approved a trial test for 5G for a period of 3months in November 2019 and the trial had been concluded and installation decommissioned.

The NCC's Executive Chairman, Professor Umar Danbatta, had that the trial was to observe any health or security challenges the network might bring forth.

The NCC Spokesman stated that the agency would continue to maintain its policy of technology and encourage service providers to deploy the best technology that would meet the needs of the society in a secure and friendly way.

The spokesman also said the NCC has provided clarifications of Frequently Asked Questions on the recent developments in which the COVID-19 was attached to the 5G network.

Dr Henry Nkemedu insisted that the claim that there would be switching on of 5G in Lagos was false.

The agency also provided clarifications on the laying of fibre optic cables within Lagos and other part of the country they the additional cables was to add to the strength of the 3G and 4G networks, he added.

The 5th genenaration of mobile technology, 5G has not been licensed by the Nigerian Communication Commission.
